Thirteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time
Feast of St Oliver Plunkett - Thursday 1st July

St Oliver Plunkett was born in County Meath in 1625.
He was ordained a priest in January 1654 and became Archbishop of Armagh on 1st December 1669. As he departed Rome for Ireland, a priest friend who had known Oliver well said to him, “…You are now going to shed your blood for the Catholic faith.” A very prophetic statement as the Irish then lived in a time of religious discrimination and deprivation. The lot of countless Catholics was one of cruel imprisonment and death as a result of the Cromwellian invasion of Ireland. Catholic education and the celebration of the sacraments were forbidden by the Penal Laws.
St Oliver Plunkett brought about reform and renewal by a three-pronged plan of action: The reform of the clergy, the establishment of catholic education and the administration of the sacraments, especially confirmation.
For this Oliver was arrested and imprisoned, charged with high treason. His time in Newgate Prison in London was one of immense suffering as he was kept in solitary confinement in an unheated cell. However, it proved also to be a time of purification from which he emerged with new strength and courage:
“Sentence of death was passed against me…It has not caused me the least terror or deprived me of even a quarter of an hour’s sleep. I am as innocent of all treason as the child born yesterday…And being the first among the Irish, I shall with God’s grace, give good example to the others not to fear death.”
On 1st July 1681 he was executed at Tyburn in London. Oliver Plunkett, bishop and martyr, was canonized on October 12th, 1975. His name is synonymous with peace and reconciliation throughout the world.
As a parish that bears the name of St Oliver Plunkett let our prayer on this day be for God to show us how we can bring peace and reconciliation into our hearts, our homes and our community.

Celebrating St Oliver Plunkett's Feast Day
A Pilgrimage to the Mass Rock
An open invitation to join us in
Celebrating the Eucharist
at the Mass Rock on the Glenside Road
7.00pm Thursday 1st July
(Please note that you need to be fit and able bodied to make this journey. Wear sensible clothing and footwear.)
This event is to honour and recall how Bishop Oliver himself said Mass on the mountain under cover of trees and shrubs and in all kinds of weather in order to keep the Catholic faith alive during a period of persecution of Catholics and the destruction of their churches.
The preparation for this event showed us that the spirit of peace and reconciliation epitomized by St Oliver Plunkett is alive and flourishing today as parishioners were assisted in their preparations by members of the Travellers’ Community and the Redeemer Central Church in East Belfast as well as the McQuillan family who gave permission for us to come on to their land.
A sincere thanks to all.

The second collection next week will be the monthly stipend for the support of the Priests of the parish.
BIBLE ALIVE
June’s edition now available from sacristy, price £1.95
OFFERTORY ENVELOPES
By now all who are registered to receive parish envelopes to support the parish should have received their envelopes. A leaflet outlining the system of donating to the parish should also have been delivered to every household. If anyone has not received either of these items please contact the parish office 90 618180 between the office hours 9am-5pm Monday-Friday.
N.B. The Offertory Envelopes now have a self adhesive strip to make the sealing of the envelopes easier. To seal your envelope simply remove the white strip and press the cover down firmly with your finger. There is no need to moisten the strip as this removes the adhesive.
Thanks to all
those who gave so generously to the Parish collections
