CORPUS CHRISTI
The body and blood of Christ
All three readings have a line or two that we hear echoed in our Eucharistic prayers. Food and meals are among the most potent symbols of scripture. The food mentioned is often simply bread, or bread and fish in the case of the feeding of the multitude. In the Hebrew Scriptures simple food is often linked with the presence of God and food is the provision of a caring God. The blessing and sharing of simple food accompany God’s blessing on a person or people. Melchizedek the mysterious priest and king comes forth with bread and wine. He is a priest outside the Levitical line – as Jesus is. He is the mediator of God’s blessing on Abram.
Paul reminds the Corinthians that the source for his understanding of the power of the meal they share together has been revealed to him by “the Lord.” He is not simply passing on what he has learnt from the other apostles (and indeed his letters predate the Gospels). The “memory” that Paul means here is that same sense of memory (anamnesis) that the Jews held for the liberating exodus events in the Passover meal. He reminds them; “every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are proclaiming his death.” Paul’s use of the word “proclaim” means a powerful, public testimony about the life and death of Christ. Partaking of this meal is an act in the new life of Christ.
In the Gospel narrative of the feeding of the 5,000, Jesus reveals his true identity in the provision of food for a hungry crowd. His compassion for the crowd finds direct response in their being fed by him. The kingdom of God is revealed and made manifest in Jesus who feeds the hungry. And there is abundance in the kingdom of God. There is also a justice dimension to this feeding. Jesus does not send them away to find what they can for themselves; his care extends to feeding the crowd then and there.

PETER'S PENCE COLLECTION
The second collection next week 13th June 2010 is (Pope’s collection) Peter's Pence Collection.
This collection was started centuries ago to provide financial support for the Pope and has evolved as a resource to fund the Holy See’s charitable actions for those in need. The Peter's Pence Collection is used by the Pope to support special charitable projects in developing countries as well as defraying expenses of the work of the Church. ‘Peter’s Pence’ is the most characteristic expression of the participation of all the faithful in the Bishop of Rome’s charitable initiatives in favour of the universal Church. The Pope, being Pastor of the whole Church, is attentive to the material needs of poor dioceses, religious institutes and of faithful in grave difficulties (the poor, children, the elderly, those marginalized and the victims of war or natural disasters; concrete aid to Bishops or dioceses in need, Catholic education, assistance to refugees and immigrants, etc.)
