St Oliver Plunkett
Parish Bulletin for Sunday 23rd May 2010

PENTECOST SUNDAY
Pentecost

Sometimes our faith can be like a car spinning wheels in mud. We have the wheels turning, the engine is in good shape, the tyres and brakes are good. The car has been recently serviced. And still, we cannot get traction. The wheels keep spinning, we can get nowhere. Today’s feast day, our celebration of God’s gift of his Holy Spirit, is the day when the wheels of our Christian journey get traction, and we can begin to follow Christ in a tangible way in our own lives.

The Holy Spirit is the ultimate teacher. This teacher does not merely have us learn off the doctrines and moral code of the Church by rote. No, this Catechist, following on all we have already learned, draws out from inside us, the faith and the vocation that is particular to each individual. This Catechist echoes the words of Christ, the Word of God. In hearing the Word in a spiritual way, we come to know God in a real and intimate fashion. God becomes the ultimate reality by means of the Spirit poured out in us.

God’s loves comes alive in us by means of the Spirit, and we can hear and proclaim his Word in a new and dynamic way.
