FIFTH
SUNDAY OF EASTER
‘All
you need in love … All you need
is love …’ The Beatles
sang it, and we’re still buying
it today. It’s easy to buy songs
about it, to read books about it,
to buy flowers, chocolates and diamond
rings to express it. Pope Benedict
thought that it was so important that
he entitled his first encyclical after
it: Deus Caritas Est. (God is Love).
Phileo, Agape, Eros, Caritas.
We
are people of love:
Phileo when we love our family, our
brothers & sisters, parents &
children, uncles and aunts. When we
share a common bond with others there
can be a sense of phileo, a kind of
togetherness.
Agape when we are awestruck by the
beauty of creation, are when we have
a religious experience. A particularly
rich experience of the Church’s
liturgy can cause agape to rise up
in us. It is no mistake that we have
the term’ agape meal’
to describe the Eucharist in the early
Christian communities.
Eros when we are attracted to another
human being. Through eros life is
gifted to ordinary human beings, by
God in what can be a most beautiful
sharing of human love.
Caritas when we reach out to others
in love. Even the simple act of placing
a coin in the Trocaire box is an act
of caritas.
Love is more ordinary than we allow
it to be. God is more ordinary than
we allow God to be. God wants to move
from the extraordinary to the ordinary;
from the supernatural to the natural;
so that what is ordinary and natural
in our lives might truly become extraordinary,
supernatural, awesome.
