Second Sunday of Lent
We know and meet the living Christ through the Sacred
Scriptures and the Sacraments
The first reading of the Mass celebrated on Ash Wednesday is taken from the Old Testament, from the prophet Joel, chapter 2.12-18. It transmits to us a divine appeal to repent, to turn from sin: “Now, now - it is the Lord who speaks – come back to me with all your heart, fasting, weeping, mourning …turn to the Lord your God again, for he is all tenderness and compassion, slow to anger, rich in graciousness and ready to relent” By listening to the Word of God regularly, by celebrating the Eucharist / the Mass and the sacraments, we sustain our relationship with God in Jesus Christ and we are supported in turning back to God from our frailties or sinfulness. God calls us as we are, not as we would wish to be. Lent is an apt time to consider again if and how one practices the life of Christian faith. Celebrating the Mass on Sundays we connect with the unfolding of God’s plan of salvation in the readings from Scripture. By celebrating the Mass we recall and make present among us the saving mysteries of the life, death and resurrection of Christ. Celebrating the Eucharist enables us to follow Jesus’ earthly ministry, to be inspired by his example; it strengthens us spiritually and empowers us to act as agents of God’s saving grace in the world.
Children: I invite you to hold a Bible in your hands. It has two major sections: What are they? Examine a bible and find out. Find the Ten Commandments in the Old Testament. With the help of your teachers and your ‘ALIVE O’ books you can work this out. Who were the Prophets? Can you find the names of some of them? Write the names of the seven sacraments.
Youth: Apart from the four Gospels, can you identify the other books of the New Testament? In Ireland 2009 is the Year of Vocation. The second reading for the Mass of Ash Wednesday from St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians, 5.20 – 6.2, begins: “We are ambassadors for Christ”. Have you thought about how you may be an ambassador for Christ, with your particular talents? Have you ever thought about becoming a Priest, or a Religious Sister or Brother – the choices are manifold. You can contact the Diocesan Vocations Director, Fr. John Murray, St. Luke’s, Twinbrook.
Adults: The XII Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops met in Rome, 5-26 October 2008 to reflect on the theme: “The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church”.
The Message published at the end of that Synod is worth reading.

Among other suggestions, it recommends that
every home should have a bible.
How can parents, or groups of parents,
best introduce their children and young
people to the bible? |
