St Oliver Plunkett
Parish Bulletin for Sunday 1st February 2009

Fourth Sunday In Ordinary Time

Vocation

Year of Vocation is to raise awareness of the common vocation that we all share through baptism as expressed through witness, love and service.

The theme for February is – a focusing on religious life.

Tomorrow Monday 2nd February is the feast of The Presentation of the Lord it is also the day for Consecrated Religious in the year of vocation. During that day we pray especially for the religious sisters who live in our parish. Sr. Claire, Sr. Emmanuel and Sr. Frances. We pray also for religious men and women who were born or lived in this parish and who are working in other parts of the Church.

Year of Vocation prayer

Lord Jesus,
You said to your disciples:
‘The harvest indeed is great
but the labourers are few.’
We ask that we may know
and follow the vocation
to which you have called us.
We pray for those called to serve:
those whom you have called,
those you are calling now,
and those you will call in the future.
May they be open and responsive
to the call of serving your people.
Amen.

Catholic Schools Week 2009
Catholic Schools Week 2009

This weekend concludes the first ever ‘Catholic Schools Week’ held in Ireland. This is a celebration much more familiar in countries where the Catholic Church and Catholic Schools are in the minority. Ironically, we have not dedicated a week of celebration and awareness to our Catholic Schools because traditionally, nearly all schools in Ireland were either Catholic or at least religious run schools. Times are changing and we now live in a country where alternative styles of education are increasingly being provided for our pluralist and multicultural society. This is new territory for Ireland and the Catholic Church here. Among the questions these developments raise are: What exactly is Catholic School? How is it unique? Why would we want our children educated in a Catholic School? What do we celebrate when we celebrate ‘Catholic Schools Week? To answer these questions we could look at today’s gospel. Mark presents us with an image of Jesus as teacher, He is a teacher who teaches with authority. His teaching made a deep impression on them but his authority is not just expressed in words, he follows up with action, which shows compassion, care and capacity for healing. A Catholic school is a place where students come to know that they are made from love, to love and be loved. A place where students are educated for life not just to make a living, a place that they learn an eternal destiny in the presence of God who loves and care for them uncontrollably. When we celebrate Catholic Schools Week we must first celebrate and give thanks for the teachers who – past, present and future dedicate themselves to doing what Jesus did in today’s gospel; teach with authority, make a deep impression on the lives of their students, show compassion to those in their care and bring healing where lives are fractured and broken. Down through the years in Ireland the strength of our Catholic schools has not just been the quality of teaching but the powerful witness, to the best of what it is to be a Catholic Christian, in the lives of the vast majority of our teachers. Long may it continue to be so!

Priest of the Diocese of Ossory
