St Oliver Plunkett
Parish Bulletin for Sunday 25th January 2009

Third Sunday In Ordinary Time

Paul makes more strange statements this week. Take today’s Second Reading, ‘Let those who have wives be as though they had none, and those who mourn as though they were not mourning’ (1 Cor 7:29-31). He’s convinced that the age in which he lives is ending. He’s right in one sense, and wrong in another. He’s wrong if he means the end of the world in terms of chronological time. He’s right if he means the end of this world for the Christian in terms of its ways and values. That has a ring to it that needs to be heard every bit as urgently today as it did in Paul’s time in Corinth. In fact, in today’s Gospel reading (Mark 1:14-20) we have Jesus preaching just that as his first public proclamation in the Gospel of Mark: ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near, repent, and believe in the good news.’ Note the sequence here. Repent first; then believe. Clearly, acceptance of the news that Jesus brings as good is not possible without change of heart and mind. And what is that news? Well, at this stage it’s the fact that the kingdom of God is at hand. Later, in the light of Jesus’ resurrection it becomes clear that entry into that kingdom brings resurrected life: new, full and everlasting. When, like Paul, we believe that such a destiny can be ours then we’ll look on this present world as passing, and act accordingly. Counter-cultural is what some people call it. Revolutionary is what I’d say it is!

Families Of The Disappeared
Appeal For End To Suffering

Dear Editor,

We, the families of the Disappeared, are today appealing to those who know where our loved ones are buried to contact the Commission set up to find their remains.

We believe that there are people out there who have yet to speak to the Commission and who, through the confidential telephone number, can provide vital new information, safe in the knowledge that this can only be used to recover the remains of our loved ones.

We are casting our appeal far and wide and this letter is being sent to every newspaper in Ireland and the Irish press in America and England.

We believe that time is running out for us.

We are encouraged by the recent events in Wicklow and we hope and pray that the remains recovered are those of Danny McIlhone.

It underlines what we have always believed, that with the right information, the remains of our loved ones can be recovered.

We believe that there are people in the community who have not yet spoken to the Commission. Now is the time to do so, you have nothing to fear in speaking to them.

All information they receive is privileged – it cannot be passed on to other agencies or used in a court of law. It can and is only used to try and locate the remains of our loved ones.

Whilst Northern Ireland has moved on and is at peace, we remain the forgotten victims of the Troubles.

Margaret McKinney said that her torment ended on the day she was able to bury her son Brian. We know that we will only find peace when the remains of our loved ones are returned to us.

So to those who can help, we have a very simple message this Christmas.

For God sake, end our suffering.  We don't want revenge or retribution, all we want is closure.  If you believe in justice and human rights then do the honourable thing and tell the Commission what you know so that we can give our loved ones a Christian burial and let us have a grave to visit and grieve.

If you have any information, please, please contact the Commission's confidential telephone number on 00800-55585500 or write to ICLVR, PO BOX, 10827, Dublin 2.

Signed
Families of the Disappeared
