Day For Life 2008

Day for Life in Ireland

Today is Day for Life in Ireland. As you know, The Catholic Bishops’ Conferences of Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales join together to celebrate the Day for Life – a day instigated by the late Pope John Paul II, dedicated to celebrating the sanctity of human life from its very beginning to its natural end. Mental ill-health can happen to anyone – 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem at some stage of their life.

Day for Life – the day in the Church’s year dedicated to celebrating the sacredness of life – will focus this year on the theme of mental health. It will help raise awareness of the needs of those affected by mental ill-health, their friends, their family and their carers, and the support that the parish community and professional services can bring.

There are pastoral letters available in the church porches on Day for Life in Ireland.

Daily Readings

You can access the daily readings on the parish website:

FEAST DAYS OF THE WEEK

Monday 6th St Bruno, born Cologne, 1033. became professor of theology in Rheims University and later its head. But his desire was to found a monastery where poverty, manual work, silence and worship would be the basics. He founded the Carthusians at La Grande Chartreuse, where he died in 1101.
Tuesday 7th Our Lady of the Rosary. Today’s celebration urges all to mediate on the mysteries of Christ, following the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary who was in a special manner associated with the incarnation, passion and glorious resurrection of the Son of God.
Thursday 9th

St Denis and his companions, Rusticus and Eleutherius were beheaded and thrown into the Seine in 258 and later buried at Montmarte. Their finest tribute is the abbey church of Saint Denis where the kings of France are buried. Denis, the first Bishop of Paris, is one of the patrons of France.

St John Leonardi, 1541-1609, supported the reforms of Trent, published a Catechism and helped to found the seminary of the Propagation of the Faith in Rome.

Saturday 11th St Canice was born in Co. Derry around 527 and died 603. Though his people were poor he studied at Clonard under Finnian and at Glasnevin under Mobhi. A deep friendship developed between himself and Colum Cille, with whom he worked for a time in Scotland, where he set up a number of churches. In Ireland his principal foundation was in Aghaboe in Ossory, but this was replaced centuries later by his church in Kilkenny.
