St Oliver Plunkett
Parish Bulletin for Sunday 7th September 2008

23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

The word of God can be confusing. And thank God for that! Otherwise, we might become intolerable, especially when it comes to doing what today’s First Reading (Ezek 33:7-9) tells us to do: to warn the wicked when God instructs us to. The confusing bit here is how to know that we have been so instructed. As Thomas Merton once wrote in Contemplation in a World of Action: ‘The Prophetic charism is a gift of God, not a duty of man.’ Becoming the moral mouthpiece for God is a tricky path to tread. That said, however, someone has to do it.

For those so called, a question to ask before giving the warning: why does God warn the wicked? No confusion here. God wants them to change for their good, not God’s. Concerned, God meets them half way through a ‘sentinel’ (v.7). That concern should set the tone of our warning. It should be positive not negative, gentle not harsh, life affirming not condemnatory. When approaching the wicked to convince them of the folly of their ways it’s good to recall that one of the most important trips we can make in life is to meet someone halfway.

Perhaps Charles Davis should have the last word: ‘Human pride has led to a notion of freedom and equality as meaning, ‘you’re on your own’. But we cannot be human on our own.’ A Spirituality for the vulnerable, p.66)

FEAST DAYS OF THE WEEK

Monday 8th Birthday of Mary. We celebrate the Birthday of Mary, who brought the dawn of hope and salvation to the world. She is the true Ark of the Covenant, the temple of God, because her body received the one Mediator.
Thursday 11th St Ciaran, was born in Roscommon around 512. He came to Clonmacnois in January 545 where he founded a monastery which was to become one of the most renowned in Europe. He died at the age of 33 while the monastery was still being built.
Friday 12th St Ailbe, is sometimes claimed as one of the pre-Patrician saints, but the annals note his death in 528. A tradition held that he went to Rome and was ordained bishop by the Pope. He founded the monastery of Emly which became very important in Munster. A 9th century Rule bears his name.
Saturday 13th St John Chrysostom, 347-407, one of the four great Greek Doctors, the ‘Golden-mouhted’ preacher, was Archbishop of Constantinople. He incurred much opposition and died in exile. Patron saint of preachers.

Used Stamps For The Leprosy Mission

Used stamps are a useful source of income for the Leprosy Mission. Stamps from all countries are aceptable, even ordinary 1st and 2nd class stamps. A small number of interesting foreign stamps are sifted out, washed off the paper, dried and sold througbh local stamp clubs. The vast remaining bulk is put into bags each containing 1kg in weight and sold to stamp dealers in England. A few bags are sold from the Leprosy Mission HQ in Lisburn to local stamp collectors.

Leave about a quarter of an inch of the envelope round the stamp when tearing it off. Please note there is a Leprosy Mission Used Stamp Box in the porches for anyone wishing to donate their used stamps.
