Sunday in Ordinary Time
|
The Canaanite woman was desperate: a Gentile breaching hostile boundaries. She pleads, just as we have done so often and as happens so often, the Lord doesn’t even seem to listen. But her need and her daughter’s torments drive her: stranger she may be, but this Man is her only hope. She shouts! The Apostles, men of substance, embarrassed by an unseemly incident in the public street. Even their attempt at mediation rebutted: his mission is elsewhere. I often picture that woman, pushing her way past the minders, kneeling in the dust at the master’s feet; his reply out of character, harsh; the onlookers amazed at her persistence. And then suddenly, all has changed – the smile, the praise, the healing: and a message for all time, for those who are always meeting barriers to faith, to acceptance, to hope; for you and me when the clouds of rejection grow darker and our needs more frightening. Then our faith must be greater than all this and we too will be brought consoled and satisfied to the holy mountain.
