St Oliver Plunkett
Parish Bulletin for Sunday 3rd August 2008

18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

It was supposed to be a get-away, across the lake to a lonely place, but still the crowds found them, beat them there even. How do you think Jesus felt, how would you feel? You’ve just heard of the murder of your own cousin. The last thing you want to do is to face people, not least an expectant horde. The tank is empty, your spirit dry – and now this! But he responded. Today, just as it was two thousand years ago, we live in a world in which people’s needs often seem to go beyond the resources we have available, very often at what seems the worst possible time for us. Been there – but have we done that? A thought. Perhaps you can tell EXACTLY how much you have in your pocket or purse right now? Most of us can’t. How would we find out? We would have to look, right? Open it up and see. How much is in your bank account? If a close friend rushed up to you and said, “I need some money right now!” how would you know if you could help him? You would have to look. Go and see. Maybe we need to do an audit. Not a financial one but to see how much we really do have and to realize that how often when we give of our time, talent and, yes our treasure – there is always more left over.
