‘Come to me, all you who labour and are over burdened, and I will give you rest’.
‘Come’ is a beautiful Gospel word. Jesus says ‘Come!’ come as you are. Come if you wish; when you are ready come.
‘Come and have breakfast,’ Jesus says to the failed and famished fishermen on the shore, in the cold grey light of dawn.
‘Come,’ he says mischievously to Peter in the boat as he hesitates to walk the waters of fear.
‘Come, let them come,’ Jesus says to the children and to those who would keep them away.
‘Come out,’ Jesus says tearfully to his friend Lazarus, bound and gagged in the tomb of death.
‘Come,’ Jesus says to those at the right hand and inherit the kingdom because you have given rest to those who were heavy laden.
‘Come to me,’ Jesus cried out on the last day of the Festival and drink from the fountain of Living Water.
Today, in words that come from the heart, a heart of humility and gentleness, Jesus speaks with utter simplicity, freedom and kindness. ‘Come to me all you who labour and are over burdened and I will give you rest.’

What is meant by ‘shoulder my yoke? |
| Answer: |
A yoke was a piece of wood laid across the shoulders of animals to harness them together and hitch them to a plough or cart. In the Bible it was a symbol of oppression and slavery; or it referred to any painful burden such as suffering. Jesus, coming from a carpentry background knew about fitting a yoke to the contours of particular animals to make it less burdensome. As carpenter turned saviour, he promised that our burdens would be lighter if we would imitate his gentleness and humility of heart. |
