SS Peter and Paul, Apostles
The leaders in the temple were against him. Naturally, people were puzzled. He spoke with authority, his message all embracing, his miracles indisputable. He tested the Apostles. What did the people think? They would be familiar with the current surmising and gossip. The people had been debating: a resurrected John the Baptist, maybe Jeremiah or one of the prophets of old. There was indeed an air of expectancy abroad.
‘Oh, yes,’ he said, ‘but you, who do you say I am?’
And Peter, already the leader spoke for them all, ‘You are the Christ,’ a profession inspired beyond human reasoning. And in return, he gives Peter a new name – the Rock – which would be the foundation of the Church. With it came the authority to guide, to loose and to mend.

ST. OLIVER PLUNKETT FEAST DAY
Tuesday 1ST JULY
St. Oliver Plunkett was born in Co. Meath on 1st November 1625. He was ordained a priest in January 1654 and became archbishop of Armagh on 1st December 1669. He was imprisoned for three years and was executed at Tyburn, London on July 11th 1681. He was declared martyr for the faith and given the title “blessed” on May 1920 and canonized a saint on October 12th 1975. See parish website for fuller biography.
PRAYER TO ST. OLIVER PLUNKETT
Glorious Martyr, Oliver who willingly
Gave your life for your faith,
Help us also to be strong in faith.
May we be loyal like you
To the See of Peter.
By your intercession and example
May all hatred and bitterness
Be banished from the hearts
Of Irish men and women.
May the peace of Christ reign
In our hearts
As it did in your heart,
Even at the moment of your death.
Pray for us and for Ireland. Amen
