| 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time
|
For First World Christians, this Gospel text seems alien – extreme. We have not been maligned for our faith. Nobody has threatened our lives. Being a Christian has not involved cross – bearing. The opposite is more true, Church membership has led to friendships-jobs-even sales. It is very different elsewhere. But the climate is changing. A persistent negative light seems to focus on Christianity from many quarters. Faith may be hazardous to your health in future days. Christians may learn again what it means to suffer with Christ – to bear a cross – to be persecuted- to find families divided over issues of faith – even to suffer beatings or martyrdom. These are more dangerous times. Times in which it is especially important for us to know God, and to be known by God. One of the greatest needs of human beings is to be known. We want to be noticed, to be remembered, to know that we are important to someone. We have this yawning, insatiable need to feel we belong. Jesus reminds us that we are noticed. God has this face recognition thing down cold, before sophisticated surveillance systems ever existed. God will not forget us, promises Jesus, or fail to recognise us and acknowledge our service. Yes God notices us all right – but do we notice Him, in creation, in the world and yes – in church.

| Tuesday 24 |
The Birth of John the Baptist, Solemnity. We rejoice at the coming of John the Baptist, a man of self-denial, integrity of life and purpose, and an uncompromising prophetic voice. This feast relates to the summer solstice, when the days begin to grow shorter, recalling John’s words, ‘He must increase, I must decrease.’ |
| Friday 27 |
St Cyril of Alexandria, bishop and doctor of the Church. Cyril, 370-444, was patriarch of Alexandria and fought against Nestorianism at the Council of Ephesus, 431, which proclaimed Mary, Mother of God. |
| Saturday 28 |
St Irenaeus, bishop and martyr. Irenaeus lived just after the apostles and knew those who had seen and talked with them. He became bishop of Lyon, the largest trading centre in Gaul. The note of moderation, the desire to win people to Christianity by love rather than fear, was apparent in all of Irenaeus’ work. |

Questions People Ask
|
 |
Making the sign of the Cross we touch the forehead, chest and shoulders. Why these parts? Are there any variations when other parts are touched? |
| Answer ... |
This lovely prayer-in-action recalls the cross of Christ while invoking the blessing of the Blessed Trinity. The Forehead represents our thinking. The chest or heart is the centre of love. Touching the shoulders is a prayer for strength in our activities or in carrying our crosses with Christ. Before proclaiming the gospel we sign the forehead, lips and heart. In anointing the sick, forehead and hands are signed. It is a simple bur profound form of prayer when performed with reverence. |
