St Oliver Plunkett
Parish Bulletin for Sunday 15th June 2008

11th Sunday in Ordinary Time

‘Young people of Ireland, I love you’, words of the late Pope and words that rank among the most remembered both of his Pontificate and of any single public pronouncement in the history of Ireland. Taking the most used, overused and very often abused words of language, ‘I love you’, the new, young and very popular Pope dispensed with the rarefied language of a former era and he spoke three magic words that made all the difference, ‘I love you’. Such a break with the past can only have found its origin in an understanding of the simple yet strikingly humane phrase that opens today’s Gospel, ‘When Jesus saw the crowds he felt sorry for them…’, he felt sorry…’, a truly new dispensation, an altogether different type of man who had feelings as well as teachings, a man with a heart as well as mind and soul, a rounded human being and the model for all who would dare to attempt to lead others to God. Today’s Gospel challenges all called to minister to do so from the point of their fullest humanity to feel sorrow – and love – and to go to the lost houses in the parish, not just the safe or the comfortable ones.

Happy Father's Day

Celebrating the Gift of our Fathers

Hear, You children, the instructions of a father
and seek to understand them.

Proverbs 4:1

As we celebrate and remember our earthly fathers,
who along with our mother gave us the gift of life,
we thank God for the gift of our beloved heavenly Father.
We are grateful too,
for all who have shown a fatherly concern for us
whether they be a step-father, grandfather, adopted father, Godfather, foster father or some other person who has watched over us and directed us in the path of goodness.
As we pray for our fathers, living or deceased,
we also give thanks to Saint Joseph,
the foster father of Jesus and head of the Holy Family.
Joseph has the many qualities a father should possess
and we ask him to watch over all fathers and fathers-to-be.
