| Fifth Sunday Of Easter
|
In today’s
Gospel, Jesus reminds the disciples
that – regardless of how things
may appear – they will not be
alone, disjointed, or disconnected.
And Jesus names the cause of that
connection as the Advocate, the Spirit
of Truth: the Holy Spirit. If there’s
a prevalent feeling in the western
world today, it’s loneliness.
Even at social events, music –
though good in itself – can
be so loud as to inhibit conversation.
Even in the workplace – a major
arena of social connection –
the focus can be less on people and
more on efficiency and savings. For
many, the joy and satisfaction is
hard to find in much of what passes
for work. Even in the family, it is
harder to get together now. Everyone
has ‘their own thing’
to do – doubtless valid in itself.
Yet the overall effect may be to heighten
that sense of being more individual,
more isolated, and more alone. Maybe
that’s just the way things are
going to be. Maybe we are powerless
to change this manner of life and
living. If so, the words of Jesus
are even more vital when he says we
are not alone and when he says that
he is with us. Thus, what could not
be found in the tomb is now lodged
in the depth of each person. Jesus
reminds us of our connections: our
connection to God for God is with
us and within us. He reminds us of
our connection to each other: Love
one another.

Planning For The Future
In last week’s
bulletin, there was a letter from
Bishop Walsh giving details of the
progress of the Planning for the Future
Campaign for Sick and Retired Priests,
Faith Development, and the restoration
of the Diocesan Cathedral.
Our parish pledged
to give £78,631 to the campaign.
So far, we have contributed £54,948
along with £7493 in gift aid
making a total of £62,441.
Further donations since then
have brought our parish contribution
to £63,013. This
means that we are £4,120 short
of the target set for us of £67,133.
If we reach our target,
the parish will receive back 10% of
it, in other words, £6,713 and
if we exceed the target then we receive
back 75% of the excess. A number
of parishioners after reading the
bulletin asked about putting in an
effort to reach our target and so
in response, there will be Planning
for the Future envelopes available
after all Masses next weekend for
parishioners who would like to make
an additional contribution or to contribute
for the first time.
