St Oliver Plunkett
Parish Bulletin for Sunday 13th April 2008

Fourth Sunday Of Easter

Year Of Vocations

Often when we hear the word 'vocation' we think only of the call to religious life or priesthood, we seldom apply it to ourselves.

This year of vocation, being held by the Irish Church from Vocation Sunday 13th April 2008 to Vocation Sunday 3rd May 2009, will be a time to remind all in the Church that through baptism everyone is called to follow Christ and that we do this in many ways:
- through marriage
- through a chosen single life
- through religious life, priesthood, brotherhood
- through all the many ways in which we live our lives.

As the Christian community needs to support vocations to the priesthood and to consecrated life, Bishops ask that we listen to the Lord’s call and pray at this time for vocations to the priesthood and the religious life.

Questions People Ask ...

questions Every now and then I think I have a vocation from God to be a priest. What should I do about it?
Answer:
Talk about it to a priest, preferably one who knows you, and pray to the Holy Spirit for guidance. Every diocese and religious order organises Vocation Days to help people to discern their calling. A vocation to priesthood is a grace given to an individual for the service of the church community. Basic requirements of a genuine vocation to the priesthood would include a desire to commit one’s life to God and the service of people, a sound faith, regular Mass attendance and prayer, the ability to co-operate with others and being willing to obey authority.
