St Oliver Plunkett
Parish Bulletin for Sunday 9th March 2008

Fifth Sunday In Lent

It is very noticeable that Jesus delayed several days, when he heard that Lazarus was dead. He realized somehow that it was best to take his time.

When the almighty is slow at answering a request of ours, he has something better in mind for us. Martha and Mary were unable to cope with the greatness and originality of Jesus. They both expressed the same idea:

‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died’
(v21, 32)

They were aware that Christ could cure the sick, but once death arrived, that was the end. Yet Martha believed that Jesus could still be beneficial in the situation – help them to get over their loss quickly! God would listen to his request, no matter what he asked from him. His words must have astounded her: ‘Your bother will rise again’. Martha held that this would happen on the last day. Strangely, Jesus’ instruction here is given to Martha, not to Mary noted for listening to him! He declares that he is the life and the resurrection – able to deal positively and creatively with death in all situations.

Faith in him, as the Messiah and Son of God bathes even actual death with life. Many of the News present believed in him, but for others it was a most disturbing happening. Lazarus was awakened from the dead, but did not rise to resurrected life – he was not the first born from the dead in this sense.
