St Oliver Plunkett
Parish Bulletin for Sunday 17th February 2008

Second Sunday In Lent

The Gospel reading for the first two Sundays in Lent always gave us glances of two of life’s extremes, evil and good. We move from the desert with its temptations to the Transfiguration at Mount Talbor. Stark choices are laid before us. Though like St. Peter, James and John in today’s Gospel, we are not always sure of what is going on. What we gather is that the hard road of the cross leads to resurrection, transfiguration. It’s easier for us to grasp temptation. This is territory we know and experience. But a Tabor glimpse of future glory? This is different. It’s not surprising that most religious sites are high places: Mont St. Michel, Jerusalem, Croagh Patrick, Skellig and Tabor. Not only Christians have this instinct; most people do. Hindus have said that their Shiva lives on Mount Everest. But you can only visit these high points. You cannot linger and pitch your tent. In fact most of us live between the barren desert and its temptations and the steep heights of glory. The plains of monotony are our lot with the challenges of routine and commitment. These are the in-between times, the ground-hog days when as one man jokingly put it – ‘its deja-vu, all over again’. Yet it is the repetitive tasks rising, working and caring that make all the difference. Our faithfulness, commitment and ‘stickability’counts. God notices His beloved sons and daughters in who He’s well pleased.

Novena Prayer to Saint Philomena

O faithful virgin and glorious martyr, Saint Philomena, who works so many miracles on behalf of the poor and sorrowing, have pity on me. Thou knowest the multitude and diversity of my needs. Behold me at thy feet, full of misery, but full of hope. I entreat thy charity, O great saint! Graciously hear me and obtain from God a favourable answer to the request which I now humbly lay before thee (make your request here). I am thoroughly convinced that through thy merits, through the scorn, the sufferings, the death thou didst endure, united to the merits of the passion and death of Jesus thy spouse, I shall obtain what I ask of thee and in the joy of my heart I will bless God, who is admirable in his saints.

Amen
