St Oliver Plunkett
Parish Bulletin for Sunday 13th January 2008

The Baptism Of The Lord

baptism of Jesus

Remember when one stage in your life ended and another began: you went to school for the first time; you left school and went to work; you got married; you joined a vibrant organisation, or you committed yourself to a deeper living of your faith. What you went through then may have been like what Jesus went through when he left Nazareth and went to the river Jordan. It was tough: in cold water far from home, facing a demanding future. Our new beginnings are often tough too. But when Jesus came out of the water he had a deep experience of being loved and blessed: ‘This is my Son, the Beloved, my favour rests on him.; As you began a new stage you may have had a similar experience, especially if it was a joyful new beginning, like getting married or becoming a parent. The Spirit came down on Jesus and gave him his new mission. At the beginning of a new stage, you may remember your sense of mission: ‘I will do my best, I will be faithful to God’s calling.’ in this Mass Jesus renews the offering he made of himself on Calvary. Grateful that we are God’s beloved sons and daughters and ready to take up again our mission in life, we offer ourselves with him.
