St Oliver Plunkett
Parish Bulletin for Sunday 23rd December 2007

4th Sunday of Advent

advent candles

We all love Christmas carols, we all have our favourites. In the Carol ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’ we sing: ‘We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell.’ And those glad tidings were tidings of peace and of joy for Christ the Saviour was born for all, born to bring to all hearts peace and joy. Christ came at his birth bringing those two gifts and as he prepared at the Last Supper to leave this world he offered peace and joy as his parting gifts: ‘My peace I give you.’ ‘I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy be complete.’ ‘My peace’ ‘My joy’ – the peace and joy that was in his heart, even though he knew what he was to face in his appalling suffering and death by crucifixion. As I write this message I think of and I pray for you, the very many people in our diocese who, for whatever reason, will find it hard to have peace and joy in your hearts and in your homes this Christmas. For many of you, and for thousands like you, Christmas has been difficult time over many years as you are carrying the deep, searing scars of our years of conflict. I think, too, and I pray for you who have suffered bereavement, especially tragic bereavement, for you who are living alone with no family and few friends left, for you who are spending Christmas away from home in hospital or in a nursing home. For you, on a purely human level, the words ‘peace’ and ‘joy may sound hollow but not if you say ‘My peace’ and ‘My joy’, for Christ wants to give to each one of us his gift of peace and of joy. And the gift that we can give him in return is to open our hearts to receive his gift of the peace and the deep joy that he alone can give us. I, with Bishop Farquhar and Bishop McKeown, will, be praying in our Christmas Masses for all the people of our Diocese. May you Christmas be peaceful and joyful. May God bless you and all your families.

Yours sincerely

+ Patrick Walsh

Thanks To All Our Volunteers

No parish could survive without people giving of their time and talents, so I want to take this opportunity to express sincere thanks to everyone who helped as a volunteer around the church or in the parish community in 2007.

Over the years, at Christmas time, small gifts have been given to volunteers such as chocolates, mugs, icons, wine. This year on the recommendation of the parish finance committee, instead of buying presents for volunteers, the money that would have been spent on these has been given to Apostolic Work Society and Trócaire.  Each organisation was given £500.

I trust volunteers will understand and appreciate this and I again thank them for their generous support throughout the year.

I pray God’s blessing on you all.

Fr Martin J Magill, Parish Priest.

Happy Christmas
