St Oliver Plunkett
Parish Bulletin for Sunday 11th November 2007

Thirty-Second Sunday In Ordinary Time

In my seminary days, clerics didn’t go to theatres. One day during a summer vacation, a classmate, a late vocation from Dublin, smuggled me into the empty auditorium of the Theatre Royal. I was intrigued by the impressive family boxes. I wondered whether this might be a glimpse of the great theatre of heaven. In my youthful fervour, I expressed a wish that my family would have a comfortable box with a good view. Family language and marriage language mean a lot to all of us. As a boy, I envied a neighbour who married into a wealthy family. Today’s reply of Jesus to his questioners changes my approach to all family words and marriage words. Not that the words are unimportant. The union between Christ and his church is the greatest of marriage unions. His first miracle-sign was at a marriage. A favourite biblical image of heaven is that of a marriage feast. But, as the comparison with the angels suggests, the heavenly marriage feast will have no earthly limitations. There will be no theatre boxes, no cordoning off. We will find ourselves married into a family with riches beyond words, beyond the best of image.
