Parish Bulletin for Sunday 14th October 2007

Twenty-eighth Sunday In Ordinary Time

Along with ‘take your bath’ – ‘say thanks’ must be in every mother’s relentless repertoire. We do need reminders to be grateful and yet while gratitude is beautiful – it is rarely done. Why? Because the act of gratitude implies dependency and belonging. Still the 1 in 10 response that Jesus got would disappoint anyone. Why did the other nine not return and give thanks? Maybe they were like this:

1 The first leper always followed the letter of the law. Jesus said he should go to the priest. So he would do just that and nothing more.
2 Going through an identity crisis. He’d been a leper so long. What would he do now? How would he cope? He was so preoccupied with the change he forgot.
3 This one believed that you are supposed to work for what you get, yet he hadn’t worked for this and so couldn’t handle the situation.
4 One became delirious with happiness.
5 May have become bitter in the past because he was driven to become a beggar. He vowed he would never say thank you to anyone.
6 He was a family man anxious and eager to get back to his family, to hold his wife and hug his children.
7 Sceptic – doubted whether Jesus really has anything to do with it. After all, he hadn’t been healed in Jesus’ presence. Maybe it was something in the air that day.
8 So excited and just had to tell everyone about this Jesus.
9 Said – ‘I’ll give thanks tomorrow.

Which leper are you?

Questions People Ask ...

Q

Why are the decades of the Rosary called mysteries? For instance, what is mysterious about the scourging of Jesus at the pillar?

A

Since Jesus was at once human and divine there is an unseen, mysterious dimension to every moment of his life. The scourging of Jesus has depths of meaning far beyond the lashes imposed on any poor wretch in history. It is the Son of God here, the innocent victim entering into solidarity with all who suffer the whips and lashes of outrageous fortune. Jesus endured the tearing of his flesh in atonement for sins of the flesh. The fact that we refer to the mysteries of the Rosary shows that it is Jesus Christ who is at the centre of the prayer.

FEAST DAYS OF THE WEEK

Monday 15th St Teresa of Avila, virgin and doctor of the Church, 1515-1582, established Carmelite convents under a reformed rule and wrote much on prayer and the spiritual life. Patron of lace-makers and headache sufferers.

Wednesday 17th St Ignatius, bishop of Antioch, died a martyr at Rome c.107. He urged Christians to unity in and through the Eucharist and around their local bishop.
Thursday 18th St. Luke, Evangelist, was a physician from a Gentile Christian milieu. He was with St. Paul on his second missionary journey and during his imprisonment in Rome.
