Parish Bulletin for Sunday 16th September 2007

Twenty-fourth Sunday In Ordinary Time

Reflections of Sunday Readings:

The Gospel issues us a stark challenge on the twenty-third Sunday of the year. Unless we give up the love of everything else, we cannot really be Jesus’ disciple.

The language here is very harsh, when Jesus talks of hating our parents, children and families. But some of Jesus’ early followers faced martyrdom. They had to make a terrible choice: do I yield to the persecutor to save my life with my family or do I die as a witness to Christ?

Even today in some countries people can face imprisonment for their beliefs. For us (hopefully) the choice is not put in such a harsh way. As far as possible, we want to follow Christ, together with our families. But if a stark choice had to be made, would we be ready to carry our cross and follow Christ?

Daily Readings

You can access the daily readings on the parish website:

Feast Days of the Week

Monday 17th

St Robert Bellarimine (1542-1621), bishop and doctor of the Church. Patron of catechists.

Wednesday 17th

St Januarius, bishop martyr.

Thursday 20th Ss Andrew Kim Taegon, priest,
Paul Chong Hasang and Companions,
martyrs. The Christian faith was introduced in Korea during the 17th century through the zeal of a group of lay persons. But from the very beginning these Christians suffered terrible persecutions that, over the course of the 19th century, gave the Church many martyrs. Outstanding among these were the first Korean priest and devoted pastor, Andrew Kim of Taegu, and the lay apostle, Paul Chong of Hasang. Among the Korean martyrs who struggled valiantly for Christ were bishops and priests, but for the most part they were laity, men and women, married and single, young and old.
Friday 21st St Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist.
Son of Alphaeus, Matthew, also called Levi, was a publican, that is, a tax collector for the Romans. His profession was despised by the Jews. Nevertheless, our Lord called him. Matthew’s vocation reminds us that sanctity is not reserved for privileged persons. All states in life, all professions, all noble tasks should be sanctified, as the Church teaches. Matthew is one of the Twelve Apostles. We do not know details of his evangelisation or of his martyrdom, which perhaps took place in Persia. Tradition unanimously acknowledges him as the author of the first Gospel, written in Aramaic, the language that our Lord himself spoke, and translated into Greek afterwards. St Matthew’s name appears among the other apostles in the Roman Canon.
