Twenty-third Sunday In Ordinary Time

Reflections of Sunday Readings:

The Gospel issues us a stark challenge on the twenty-third Sunday of the year. Unless we give up the love of everything else, we cannot really be Jesus’ disciple.

The language here is very harsh, when Jesus talks of hating our parents, children and families. But some of Jesus’ early followers faced martyrdom. They had to make a terrible choice: do I yield to the persecutor to save my life with my family or do I die as a witness to Christ?

Even today in some countries people can face imprisonment for their beliefs. For us (hopefully) the choice is not put in such a harsh way. As far as possible, we want to follow Christ, together with our families. But if a stark choice had to be made, would we be ready to carry our cross and follow Christ?

Daily Readings

Feast Days of the Week

Wednesday 12th

The Holy Name of Mary: St Ailbe, bishop. Dedication of the Cathedral in Kilmore.

Thursday 13th St John Chrysostom (347-407), bishop and doctor of the Church. One of the four great Greek Doctors, the ‘Golden-Mouthed’ preacher, was Archbishop of Constantinople. He incurred much opposition and died in exile. Patron saint of preachers.
Friday 14st The Triumph of the Cross. The discovery of the True Cross is dated to 14 September 320. On September 335 the churches on Calvary were dedicated and the cross that St Helena discovered was venerated there the next day. The annual commemoration of that event has been celebrated since, in praise of the redemption won for us by Christ.
