Twenty-third
Sunday In Ordinary Time
Reflections of Sunday Readings:
The Gospel issues us a stark challenge on the twenty-third Sunday of the year. Unless we give up the love of everything else, we cannot really be Jesus’ disciple.
The language here is very harsh, when Jesus talks of hating our parents, children and families. But some of Jesus’ early followers faced martyrdom. They had to make a terrible choice: do I yield to the persecutor to save my life with my family or do I die as a witness to Christ?
Even today in some countries people can face imprisonment for their beliefs. For us (hopefully) the choice is not put in such a harsh way. As far as possible, we want to follow Christ, together with our families. But if a stark choice had to be made, would we be ready to carry our cross and follow Christ? |
