St Oliver Plunkett
Parish Bulletin for Sunday 8th April 2007

Not a lot happens on Monday mornings in most cultures. For the Western world it is the start of the working week, with survival as the goal of grim-faced commuters.

Dean Swift, in caustic vein, called Monday the Parson’s holiday, but it certainly isn’t a day of rest for the medical professions, with illnesses spiking on a Monday morning. In the Jewish world our Sunday is the ‘Monday’ the first day of the week, the day after Saturday Sabbath. Did this loving troupe risking an early visit to a borrowed grave in what was then the city rubbish dump expect much? We’ll never know.

etween two candles, but on a cross between two thieves; at a crossroads so cosmopolitan that they had to write his title in (threes languages)…at the kind of place where cynics talk smut, and thieves curse, and soldiers gamble. Because that’s where he died. And that’s what he died about. And it is where Christians ought to be and that is what Christians should be about.’ Keeping our Christianity confined to a church is like expecting that sitting in a garage will turn you into a car. Jesus died and rose again in the centre of the world. Shouldn’t we at least try and live this faith in the heart of the world for Easter’s sake?

HOLY WEEK

PALM SUNDAY:
Confessions after 10am, 11.30am & 1pm Masses.

TUESDAY:

Penitential Service 7.30pm where we as a community acknowledge our need of forgiveness and celebrate God’s mercy together. In addition to priests of the parish, a number of other priests will be available for the sacrament of reconciliation.

HOLY THURSDAY:

  No Morning Mass.
Chrism Mass in St. Peter’s Cathedral at 11am. Solemn Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 7.30pm followed by procession of the Blessed Sacrament to the Altar of Repose followed by confessions. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will then take place until night prayer at 10.00pm. St. John does not speak of the Last Supper in his Gospel, but only of the ‘Washing of the Feet’ that took place at the same event. There is a deep link between these two realities. The washing of the feet like the Eucharist is an intense moment of Communion in the mind of St. John. Do you accept the invitation to have your feet washed this Holy Thursday as a sign of your willingness ‘to do for others what Jesus has done to you’ if so please contact either Fr. Magill or Fr. Devlin or parish sister.

GOOD FRIDAY:

  No morning ceremonies.
The Solemn Commemoration of the Lord’s Passion with Veneration of the Cross and Holy Communion at 3pm followed by confessions. Stations of the Cross at 7.30pm.
