Parish Bulletin for Sunday 11th March 2007

Third Sunday in Lent

An extract from the Bishop’s Pastoral Letter
Challenges and Opportunities

“The present time brings many opportunities to bear witness to Christ and fresh challenges for the Church in Ireland…your people need to view the changes in society with discernment and here they look to you for leadership. Help them to recognise the inability of the secular, materialistic culture to bring true satisfaction and joy.”

Yes, we have seen huge changes in society in the past few decades. ‘The influence of secularism has struck Ireland with great speed and intensity’ to quote the words of Archbishop Brady in his Address to the Holy Father.

One is reminded of words in the well known hymn ‘Abide with me’ – “Change and decay in all around I see”. So much of the change is for good and is to be welcomed but much of the change had led to a decaying society with the glorification of materialism and individual wealth which might bring transient superficial happiness and enjoyment to some but not true satisfaction and joy.

And the hymn continues – “O thou who changest not abide with me”. The message of Christ does not change. The Church must proclaim the ever true message of Christ which is a truly authentic human message. The secular world may not want to hear it or listen to it, but the secular world must at least see that message lived out by each member of the Church – whether bishop, priest, religious or lay person.

St. Patrick’s Day 17th March 2007

Patrick first came to Ireland as a slave. In his loneliness, he discovered God’s deep love for him and found faith. He began to pray. After his escape from captivity, Patrick had a vision. Patrick returned as a missionary, visiting parts of the country where the faith had never been preached. A short time later, Ireland was sending out its own missionaries to restore Europe’s faith.

Patrick you brought the Good News to our ancestors and taught them to share it – pray for us.

St Patrick Breastplate

Christ be with me, Christ before me,
Christ be after me, Christ within me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ at my right hand, Christ at my left
Christ in the fort, Christ in the chariot
Christ in the ship,
Christ in the heart of every one who thinks of me.
Christ in the mouth of every one who speaks to me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.
