St
Oliver Plunkett
Parish Bulletin for Sunday 18th February 2007
|
Seventh
Sunday in Ordinary Time
| Message
from Bishop Walsh
at the beginning of LENT
As the priest blesses the ashes on Ash Wednesday
he prays
|
“Lord,
bless the sinner who asks for your
forgiveness
and bless all those who receive these
ashes.
May they keep this Lenten season
in preparation for the joy of Easter.” |
And
as he places the ashes on our forehead he
asks us to
|
“Turn
away from sin and be faithful to the
Gospel.” |
We all stand in need of God’s forgiveness
for our sins. In Lent we make a special
effort to turn away from sin to ask the
Lord’s forgiveness in a spirit of
true repentance.
It
is in that spirit of repentance that we
make the Lenten season a special time of
prayer, of penance and of works of mercy.
For prayer, penance and works of mercy are
a unit, they go hand in hand. In the words
of a fifth century saint St. Peter Chrysologus:
“They
give life to one another for
fasting is the soul of prayer
and mercy is the life of fasting.” |
We should make time for prayer each day
during Lent and, of course, the greatest
prayer of all is the prayer of the Mass
and very many people do make the effort,
often at great sacrifice, to participate
in Mass each day during the Lenten season.
Penance is the soul of prayer and the penance
of fasting is a time-honoured tradition
in the Church, and we observe Ash Wednesday
and Good Friday as particular days of fasting.
I ask that we should all, in so far as our
health and circumstances allow, observe
a strict fast on Ash Wednesday and on the
six Fridays of Lent. On those days we should
fast from after breakfast until say 6pm.
(taking only liquids). The evening meal
should be a simple meal. If right across
our diocese parishioners keep this fast
it will a striking witness of the solidarity
of our diocese with the countless millions
of really hungry people all over the world
for whom every day of the year is a fast
day and many of whom die each year from
starvation. Those who suffer and die are
our sisters and brothers and we should be
generous in the extreme in our giving to
the Trocaire Lenten Appeal. Last Lent our
diocese contributed the extraordinary generous
sum of £774,050.
When
we receive the Ashes on Ash Wednesday we
will be given a small prayer card which
will ask us to commit ourselves as a diocese
to prayer, fasting and almsgiving during
Lent in preparation for the joy and grace
of Easter. You will be making your Lenten
commitment as part of our commitment as
a diocese. Keep this card in a prominent
place as a reminder the Lent is “a
great season of grace, a gift from God,
to renew us in spirit”.
Yours
sincerely
+
Patrick Walsh

| Lent
| Lent
is a forty-day period before Easter.
It begins on Ash Wednesday. We skip
Sundays when we count the forty days,
because Sundays commemorate the Resurrection.
Lent begins on 21st February 2007
and ends on 8th April 2007.
In
the Catholic Church, Lent officially
ends at sundown on 5th April (Holy
Thursday), with the beginning of the
Mass of the Lord’s Supper.
In most churches, the decorations
are purple or blue, royal colours
to prepare for the King.
Lent is a season of soul-searching
and repentance. It is a season for
reflection and taking stock. Lent
originated in the very earliest days
of the Church as a preparatory time
for Easter, when Christians rededicated
themselves and when converts were
instructed in the faith and prepared
for baptism. By observing the forty
days of Lent, the individual Christian
imitates Jesus’ withdrawal into
the wilderness for forty days. Lent
has been observed in the church since
the time of the Apostles.
This
Wednesday 21st February is Ash Wednesday;
it is a day of fast and abstinence.
Masses will be at 7am 10am & 7.30pm.
Ashes will be distributed at all the
Masses.
Masses
for Lent every weekday at 7am, 10am
& 7.30pm. Sunday Masses as usual.
Trocaire
boxes are now available in the church
porches please take one.
Bible
Alive on sale for Lent price £1.95.
