St Oliver Plunkett
Parish Bulletin for Sunday 4th February 2007

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Strange where God reveals himself. From the holiest part of the temple (First Reading) to a borrowed boat on the Sea of Galilee. We tend, if truth be told, to prefer the former.

A God in a predictable place, accessible and controllable. This idea of an unleashed God cropping in the most unexpected of places is just too much. Not that King Uzziah of the 1st reading thought he needed God. He had defeated every enemy; built an army of 300,000 elite troops; perfected state-of-the-art warfare and developed Israel’s economy, making it the envy of the world. As long as he sought the Lord, things prospered – but things changed when his heart looked to his own strength, rather than relying on the hand of God.

We’ve done it as well. We may feel we don’t need Him as much; we’re too busy building careers, bringing up families and buying things. Along comes a Peter moment. He was presumably a master fisherman who ‘worked hard all night long and caught nothing.’ Despite all our skills and experience, some problems can’t be solved by planning, budgeting or trying to figure things out. By a word God achieves what no human could. Peter was a ‘nowhere man’ up to that point. He was netted in his nets, means had become ends. He had lost his way, but in that moment of break down, God broke through. It’s as true for you, especially when you’re out of your depth in ‘deep water.’ Trust changes everything.
