St Oliver Plunkett
Parish Bulletin for Sunday 14th January 2007

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

World Day of Migrants

Food fans will know the wisdom of saving the best for last. The memory of the event just lasts longer, it’s as true of a sumptuous dessert as it is of the finale of film or musical score.

It seems to have been the mind of Jesus as well. After all at Cana he said to Mary, ‘my time has not yet come.’ At the wedding banquet, Christ performed His first miracle, and began His ministry among the people. But His ‘time’ came at the end, when he gave His life for us. He saved His best for last.

What comes after the account of Cana in the Gospel of John is the cleansing of the temple. A space dedicated to God, polluted by commerce is emptied by Jesus. In a still-young year, there is still time to clear out the clutter of our lives, to make that space for God in our bodies.

We have the opportunity to serve our master with all the gifts given to us. When our life on earth is finished and we (hopefully) enter His heaven, we are assured He will have saved His best for us for last. God’s hand is never shortened.
