Parish Bulletin for Sunday 24th December 2006

Fourth
Sunday Of Advent
| We
love to decorate our homes at Christmas.
It is part of entering into ‘the spirit
of Christmas.’
What
is meant by ‘the spirit of Christmas’?
It is surely not what the adverts mean.
For us those words should have a deep spiritual
meaning which we must hold on to, as all
around us we see what appears to be a concerted
effort to banish Christ from Christmas.
The
true spirit of Christmas is evident in our
homes if the central Christmas ‘decoration’
is the crib. The crib of course is not a
mere decoration – it is a visible
reminder to us of what Christmas is all
about.
The Christmas Feast is the family feast
of the year. It is the time when the scattered
family comes together and it is one of the
special joys of Christmas when an absent
member is welcomed home, even if only for
a short while. Many of you will have that
special joy this Christmas but I know that
there are also many of you for whom Christmas
will be sad, a lonely time. You may be living
alone or coping with a family bereavement
or some deep family upset. You may be ill
at home, in nursing home or hospital. You
may be spending Christmas away from home,
perhaps very far from home. You are all
very much part of the family of our Diocese
and I hold you all in my prayers.
Despite
affliction of any kind you will, you must,
celebrate Christmas for you are very close
to the newborn child in the crib who holds
out his arms to embrace you, to draw you
to himself. ‘Come to me all you who
labour and are heavily burdened and I will
give you rest.’
Bishop
Farquhar, Bishop McKeown join me in prayer
that each person, each family in our diocese
will celebrate Christmas in the true spirit
of Christmas, the spirit of joy, of peace,
of love.
Yours sincerely
+ Patrick Walsh

No
parish could survive without people giving of
their time and talents, so I want to take this
opportunity to express sincere thanks to everyone
who helped as a volunteer around the church or
in the parish community in 2006.
Over
the years, at Christmas time, small gifts have
been given to volunteers such as chocolates, mugs,
icons, wine. This year on the recommendation of
the parish finance committee, instead of buying
presents for volunteers, the money that would
have been spent on these has been given to St
Vincent de Paul, the Apostolic Work Society and
Trócaire Global Gifts. Each organisation
was given £350. I trust volunteers will
understand and appreciate this and I again thank
them for their generous support throughout the
year.
I
pray God’s blessing on you all.
Fr Martin J Magill, Parish Priest.
