St Oliver Plunkett
Parish Bulletin for Sunday 1st October 2006

26th Sunday in Ordinary Time

A current RTE programme is titled ‘How long will you live?’

Given that the death rate is still 100% despite our best efforts, it might be just as important to ask ‘How will you live?’

The content is more important than the length. Will it be one that grasps and clings or rather one that celebrates the creative life of God wherever and in whomever it is found? A true sign of greatness is the ability to step back, hand on heart, and rejoice in another person succeeding you. But we’re terrible at it! The advice to quit at the top is all very well, but we frequently let the moment pass.

Interestingly Eldad & Medad upon whom the Spirit came (First Reading) hadn’t gone to the Tent of the Lord’s presence with Moses and the other 70. We can be fussy as Joshua and John (Gospel) unimpressed by someone who is ‘not one of us’ doing the Lord’s work.

Part of us is like the boss who wrote this memo to his personnel director:

‘Search the company for an alert, talented young worker
who can step into my shoes.
When you find him – fire him!’

If you feel constantly threatened by someone else’s ability or success, you have a problem that needs facing. If you find yourself belittling another person, cutting them down to ‘size’ – maybe it’s yourself who is being diced up. God isn’t choosey – we are.
