St Oliver Plunkett
Parish Bulletin for Sunday 10th September 2006

23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

The internationally recognized Marian Shrine of Knock, Co Mayo some 1.5 million people visit every year.

The story of Knock began on 21st August 1879 when Our Lady, St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist, an altar with a cross and a lamb with adoring angels appeared at the south gable of Knock Parish Church. The apparition was witnessed by fifteen people, young and old.

For the deaf community who go on pilgrimage here, Knock has a special significance, as it was a silent apparition. No voice, no message, just the apparition. It is enough, for we live in a deafening world. The noise of machines is sometimes hard to bear, but far more deafening is the insistence of the human voice. It is almost impossible to escape from it. Every age, no doubt, talked its full; but we having ways of storing, multiplying, amplifying, broadcasting the voice now till it fills every crevice in our lives. How will the word of God penetrate our noise? It is not just to that unnamed man of the gospel that Jesus sighs heavenward and says ‘Be opened.’ In what and where have we shut him out?
