St Oliver Plunkett
Parish Bulletin for Sunday 23rd July 2006

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

We’re all aware that the physical landscape and skyline of our towns and cities in Ireland have been transformed with so much construction, but is our quality of life being enhanced or diminished by all this development?

Many commentators on Irish society describe a considerable poverty of spirit, a fracturing of community and family relationships, a crumbling of institutions and values with a growing sense of isolation and disconnectedness, particularly among the young. It seems we have learned the price of everything and the value of nothing. Whatever about our using money to assert our status and distinctiveness, we all experience hunger and know the need for rest and relaxation, a holiday or vacation. Most of us cherish such breaks and take them when possible.

But have you thought of the need for a special time and a special place, a ‘desert place,’ for your spiritual life? It’s hard to find, and even a bit crowded as Jesus and his apostles discovered. But, it’s essential, as people’s needs are endless! With the best of intentions you try ‘being there’ for them, and before you know it, you’re drained. We need that spiritual space in prayer, reflection and reading. After all, information may change minds, but only God can change the heart.

A July Saint

Saint Martha

We learn of Martha from the gospels. She was sister of Mary and Lazarus who lived at Bethany. Their home was a place of welcome for Jesus. Martha is associated with the practical side of hospitality, such as preparing meals, while her sister Mary is often portrayed as the contemplative one who likes to sit at the feet of Jesus listening to his words. But Martha is a woman of faith. She proclaims her faith in Jesus as ‘the Christ, the Son of God’. This faith is prelude to the raising to life of her dead brother Lazarus. The feast of Saint Martha is celebrated each year on 29th July
