St Oliver Plunkett Feast Day
Wednesday 1st July

St Oliver Plunkett

St Oliver Plunkett was born in Co Meath on 1st November 1625. He was ordained a priest in January 1654 and became Archbishop of Armagh on 1st December 1669. He was imprisoned for three years and was executed at Tyburn, London on July 11th 1682. He was declared martyr for the faith and given the title ‘blessed’ on May 1920 and canonized a saint on October 12th 1975.

This year all over the country, on the feast-day of St Oliver Plunkett, parish communities are reflecting on peace and reconciliation in Ireland and throughout our troubled world. We thank God for recent successes in the peace process and we pray to St Oliver himself a tireless worker for peace to assist us in making peace with our sisters and brothers.

PRAYER TO ST. OLVIER PLUNKETT

Glorious Martyr Oliver
who willingly gave your life for your faith.
Help us also to be strong in faith.
May we be loyal like you to the See of Peter.
By your intercession and example
may all hatred and bitterness
be banished from the hearts of Irish men and women.
May the peace of Christ reign in our hearts
as it did in your heart even at the moment of your death.
Pray for us and for Ireland.
Amen.

Gaza humanitarian crisis

The recent Israeli military offensive has further deepened the humanitarian crisis facing the people of Gaza. Supplies of basic food and fuel and the provision of electricity, water and sanitation in Gaza remain critical. Even before the Israeli offensive on Gaza started, 80 per cent of the population was dependent on food aid. People are now in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.
